Thyroid eye disease seriously effects only a small percentage of patients with thyroid problems. It is often related to the immune system attacking the tissues of the eye socket. This can result in a number of problems:
Depending upon the severity of the condition, diagnosis may require an office visit, blood tests, visual field testing, and imaging such as a CT or MRI scan. Each of the eye problems may require a diferent type of treatment.
Blurred vision may require steroids, radiation, decompression surgery, or immunosuppressive drugs. Eyelid retraction may respond to comtrol of hyperthyroidism or may require surgical eyelid release. Chemosis often responds to treatment for blurred vision or bulging eyeball. Double vision may respond to steroids, be controlled with prism glasses, or require eye muscle surgery. Bulging of the eyeball sometimes requires decompression surgery.
